Ceredigion Coast – Places to Visit
If you’ve come to Ceredigion for a day or even a couple of days there’s a wide variety of things to do and places to visit. Here in this article I’m going to take you on a journey along the Ceredigion coast showing you some of my favourite places to visit.
A lot of these places can actually all be viewed in one day as I have done in the past but you can find yourself staying in one or two places all day.
Mwnt – Starting Point
I always like to start at this beach as it’s close to Cardigan which has a Tesco which is ideal to pick up some pic-nic food. The actual beach is situated at the bottom of a hill with quite a lot of steps going down to it but the beach is well worth it! – but can get very busy in the summer. You can also walk past an old church to the top of a hill where you can enjoy some spectacular views whilst eating your lunch.
Aberporth –
Now I’m not 100% sure without looking at a map but I’m pretty sure Aberporth comes first before Tresaith. In any case Aberporth offers a very large beach as you can see in the photo and is very popular with families.
Tresaith – Waterfall and Beach
Now as you can see in the title the beach has a waterfall and is one of the main attractions that this beach has to offer. The Waterfall is just around the right hand side corner of the beach but would recommend you go when the tide is out so you can walk around to it, otherwise you’ll have to walk over a lot of rocks. The Waterfall may look small but is really quite powerful!
Llangrannog
Next alone the coast is Llangrannog, very popular with families again and with an educational centre nearby that offers a variety of activities for schools to take part in (quad biking etc), they often travel here and stay for a week or two. The beach also has a few small caves in the hill side on the right.
New Quay –
I really quite like New Quay, there are two small beaches and a harbour where you can often see Dolphins just off of the coast. There’s also a lifeboat station that you can walk around too. The curry and chips are brilliant and you can sit on the harbour wall when you eat them to admire the view. The town has a few pubs and shops and can get extremely busy in the summer, there aren’t many pay and display car park spaces on the seafront but there are a few when you first drive in.
Not that far away from New Quay is a honey farm which is also a great visiting point!
Aberaeron – Honey Ice Cream
Talking of Honey, Aberaeron is known for its honey ice cream shop near the Harbour. There’s also a few shops here and again has great fish and chips but can get really busy with extremely limited car parking. However it’s a great place to stop off at.
Aberystwyth – Student Town
The biggest town along the Ceredigion coast is Aberystwyth which is home to over 10,000 students during term time. There are also a lot more shops and eating places here and brand names that you’ll recognise! – Two large beaches (North and South) which makes it popular with families. You can also get on a tram which takes you at the top of Constitution Hill which will give you some amazing views. If you’re really feeling fit why not walk up?
Clarach Bay
A small beach between Aberystwyth and Borth. You may have already heard of this place as it’s surrounded by static caravan parks. This is a really nice beach but have only ever seen it in the winter as I know for sure you won’t get a car park space unless you stay at one of the parks.
Upper Borth
Just up the coast a bit further you’ll come across Borth. If you travel through to this place from Aberystwyth try and go through the country roads as you’ll get a view of the entire long beach of Borth before you drop down the hill.
There are a couple of tourist shops and a lot of pubs.
Ynyslas
Just up a little further from Borth you’ll come to a beach that you can drive on! – lots and lots of sand this long wide beach joins Borth beach.
If you park on the sand you’ll have to either walk around the sand dunes or over them to get to the beach. Also be careful not to park too close to the estuary as the sand is quite soft and you could end up getting stuck like me!
Aberdovey
Probably not being able to complete all the other places and Aberdovey in one day this is also a very nice place to visit. The sand is really clean the beach goes on for miles. There are only a couple of small shops here but with ample pay and display car parking. This is a great beach with great views but it’s difficult to get to as you have to drive miles around the estuary!
